Generation

If you generate electricity, Renfrew Hydro will work with you to add your source to our distribution network.
We work with Generators in 2 programs: Net Metering and Standard Offer.

Net Metering

What is Net Metering?
Net Metering is a program whereby eligible customers with specific generation facilities can reduce their net energy costs by exporting surplus generated energy back onto the utility distribution system for credit against the energy the customer consumes from the distribution system.

Who is eligible to participate in the Net Metering program?
Participation in the Net Metering Program is available to all Renfrew Hydro customers with a generator that meet all of the following conditions:

  • The electricity is generated primarily for the customer's own use;
  • The electricity generated is conveyed to the customer's own consumption point without reliance on the Renfrew Hydro distribution system;
  • The maximum cumulative output capacity of the generator does not exceed 500 kW;
  • The electricity is solely generated from a renewable energy source (such as wind, drop in water elevation, solar radiation, agricultural bio-mass, or any combination thereof).

For more information visit Ontario Ministry of Energy or Contact Us.

Standard Offer

What is Standard Offer Program?
The Standard Offer Program encourages and promotes greater use of renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, photovoltaic (PV), renewable biomass, bio-gas, bio-fuel, landfill gas, or drop in water elevation for generating electricity. Renewable electricity generation projects with capacity of 10 MW or less, which meet the program's requirements, may be connected to Renfrew Hydro Distribution System for exporting electricity.

Who is eligible to participate in the Standard Offer Program?
Participation in the Standard Offer Program is available to all Renfrew Hydro customers with a generator that meet all of the following conditions:

  • Generate electricity using renewable sources of energy
  • Have installed generating capacity of no more than 10 MW
  • Connected to Toronto Hydro Distribution System at 27.6 kV or less
