peaksaver Program

Volunteering for the peaksaver ® program means you will be joining your neighbours in helping reduce the demand for electricity in your community. And you'll feel great knowing you're doing something good for the environment. To participate in the peaksaver program you must be a Renfrew Hydro customer and have central air conditioning that is in good working order. The installation technician will verify that your central air conditioning unit meets the program requirements.

As a peaksaver ® participant you will receive a free programmable thermostat, professionally installed in your home or business, at no cost to you (a $350 value). The installer will help you program your new thermostat to match your daily schedule and provide you with a Quick Reference Guide on its operation. Once your thermostat is set it will automatically adjust the temperature in your home or business to reduce energy consumption during times when you are not there. Your energy saving may be as much as 10%.

As an added benefit, you will be able to adjust this special thermostat over the internet and as an added incentive, you will receive $25 from Renfrew Hydro for participating.

On the hottest weekday afternoons during the summer, when the use of air conditioners is greatest, Renfrew Hydro may signal to your thermostat to cycle your air conditioner to alternately run for 15 minutes and pause for 15 minutes over the course of the peaksaver event. This will typically happen on the hottest weekday afternoons during the summer when demand on the electrical system is the greatest.  Weekends and holidays are excluded. The duration of the peaksaver event is typically 4 hours.  Your fan will continue to run so you may not notice that an event is taking place. peaksaver events will occur typically only on weekday afternoons, not on weekends or holidays.  Plus, upon request, you will have the ability to opt out twice a year if you need to.

You will be helping reduce smog and air pollution because coal-fired and gas-fired generating stations will be used less often. You will help avoid the need for costly new generating stations and you'll help keep electricity prices lower. During peak times, Ontario has to buy power from outside the province increasing the overall cost of electricity. By helping to reduce the demand for electricity, you help to ensure less expensive electricity is purchased to meet the province's needs.
